Galaxies typically are part of a larger aggregation of galaxies, not just floating on their own.

While I finished my PhD Astronomy and am grateful for it, I did not secure yet (almost a year) a job in my Dream career where I invested decades and even those darn student loans (!), in addition to the support and sacrifice of my family. In all honesty, in the retrospect, (and nobody told me earlier either), I focused during the PhD program pretty much on the requirements, such as publications especially.

Perhaps it would have been career-wise to do more  networking, not that I am any good at it. When my own group kind of broke down due to the main PI’s exit from the duties, I found myself quite alone, and it is the same way now. Definitely, having an extended network would have probably given me a better edge in the job search in such a situation.

Now, I hope to be less critical of people who are there still supporting my job search even though I am struggling for a while to secure one and am only able to work just a fraction of working time on my cool  research projects. I am quite grateful to those few nice researchers. I appreciate that things can change and you can lose what you had taken for granted.

I probably should take wisdom from galaxies and seek more actively in my job search a good group, I pray for one! I have experienced a glimpse or two into an active research group and look forward to work on cool projects with nice people in my career, and making awesome discoveries about galaxies. As someone smart said to me, the times of a lone genius are gone, as now collaborative work is the most common driveway of  science, even in  astronomy. In addition to keeping up with AI, data science, coding etc. techniques and literature, I aim to improve my people skills, even though especially after living in Finland for a while, it’s not so easy, I do enjoy working on the science staff in my little corner and can get lost in that work, and especially after COVID, having human interaction in person takes quite a lot from me. An opportunity to dare coming out of the comfort zone, hopefully it pays off with a stable job.
